Little Battlers Pre-school

Welcome to "Little Battlers" our pre-school for children aged 3 and 4 years.  The Pre-school is situated on the same site as Battling Brook. The school and Little Battlers Pre-school received a "good" ofsted report in 2011.

The pre-school has it's own policies which can be obtained from their website and there are also copies in our Parent's folder which can be found on the table as you come through the main door.

The Pre-school team consists of 6 ladies all with lots of experience working with young children.  We work on a 1:13 ratio (1staff member to 13 children) and our aim is to provide our children with a stimulating and safe environment in which their learning will develop through play.

Play underpins the delivery of all the Early Years Foundation Stage. We provide the children with well planned experiences indoors and outdoors based on the children’s spontaneous play.

Every child at the Pre-school is assigned a key person (a member of staff) who will be responsible for working with them, giving them reassurance to feel safe and cared for and who will build a relationship with their parent/carer.  They will keep records of development and progress and share these with parents/carers and other professionals when necessary.

The Early Years Foundation Stage principles are grouped into 4 distinct themes.

  • Learning and Developing

Our children are assessed and their learning developed through the statutory Early Learning Goals. These are in 7 areas and provide the basis for planning:-

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
  • Communication and Language.
  • Physical development.
  • Literacy.
  • Mathematics.
  • Understanding of the World.
  • Expressive arts and design.

We provide opportunities for our children to practice and extend their skills in these areas.

Each child has their own “Learning Journey”, this is a special book that children and parents can look at and it has photos, comments, pieces of work, observations that all build up a picture of how each child is progressing. At the end of the year when children leave to go to big school they can take their book with them to keep forever as a record of their early Pre-school days.

Our Pre-school aims to have regard to the DFEE Code of Practice on Special Education Needs and also to the guidelines supplied to private and voluntary provider of Pre-school education.  We aim to provide a welcome and appropriate learning opportunity for all the children. The needs and progress of children who have educational needs are monitored by our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) - Mrs Mason who will keep all information and records confidential, only shared with Parents/Carers, Pre-school Manager and outside professionals.

What’s special at Little Battlers”?

In the main room we have 3 computers with flat screens for the children to practice their fine motor skills. We have a lovely kitchen and each week for half a term at a time, the children make lots of yummy foods which they then all eat at snack time. Yummy!

Trips - We go on two trips a year, one in the Autumn term and one in the Summer term.

Makaton signing - All the staff are trained to sign and we use this with all of the children incidentally throughout the sessions.

We have a special room which we call “The Learning Den” and in this room, we have an interactive white board. Every session different groups use the room to do the register, calendar and have some small group time to talk, share ideas and learn together.  This can also be used as a quiet room where staff can work with very small groups or children or on a one to one basis.

During each session we use a snack bar system. The children learn to wash their hands before accessing a drink and a piece of fruit when they are ready, so play is not interrupted and the children can help to get the tables ready by putting out the cups, milk cartons and bowls of fruit.

What about outside?

We have a climbing frame with a slide. We have a play cottage with a track going around it and the children enjoy driving around the track on a selection of scooters, cars and vehicles that need 2 people to work them so children have to take turns and work co-operatively.

We have a small sensory garden, and an area where the children grow vegetables, we have two digging areas for the children to dig and discover to their hearts content.

We have sand available and an adventure trail with a bridge to balance on; we have a variety of slides and equipment to help develop their gross motor skills.

We provide the children with lots of different materials to work with e.g. chalks, tubes, pegs and sheets including a wooden structure for their imaginative play.

We have some lorry tyres, benches, chalk boards and a wooden structure which has a canvas cover over it which the staffs designed, and the children can decide what this will become in their play each session. There are markings on the playground so it’s all systems go for some fantastic creative and mathematical play.

We have portable boxes full of equipment that ties in with the 7 areas of learning.

Links with the main school.

We visit the main school library once a week.  In the Summer term, we have phase assemblies when our Pre-school children are invited to an assembly with the reception children. We also watch the infants perform their assemblies once a week in the Summer Term.

We visit the Reception classes and play in their playground and get to know the Reception teachers before we start big school. (Summer Term). The Reception children watch our Christmas rehearsal and we watch their practice run.  We regularly visit the main school to show the reception children anything special that we have been doing.

Links with home.

We greatly value communication between home and Pre-school. Every child has a little book (home/contact book) in which parents/carers can write messages to staff and vice versa. We also have a comment box for any suggestions or concerns to be put in. There is a parent’s file on the table as you come in with everything you will need to know in. A weekly letter goes up on the wipe board outside every Monday with details about the week ahead. This is also available via email and can also accessed via our website.

We are in the process of setting up our own Pre-school fundraising committee; we have some lovely mums who want to help, so if you are interested, please let us know.

Staff are available for the first ten minutes at the beginning of every session to talk to parents/carers when they bring their children in and appointments can be made if longer discussions times are needed.

Uniform

Uniform is not compulsory but most of our children have a “Little Battlers” T-Shirt, sweat top or fleece.  Pre-school can be very messy at times and having a uniform can save on spoiling your child’s everyday clothes. You can order uniform from Graphics to Go or Tesco online.

15 Hours entitlement: 8.45am - 11.45am
30 Hours entitlement: 12.25pm - 3.25pm

 

Funding - how it works!

In Leicestershire, children access Nursery funding in the term after their third birthday. This means children can access a minimum of 3 or up to 5 sessions per week free of charge. Children can access sessions before their funding comes into place.   In these cases a charge of £4.00 per hour is made (payable in advance).

The role of staff

Behaviour

The general principals of our Good Behaviour Policy will be followed in the pre-school.  Good behaviour should be promoted in a consistent way in order for the children to feel safe and secure, the school to be orderly, and to set the tone for effective teaching and learning.

The role of the parent
Parents have a vital role in fostering good behaviour. Difficult behaviour is frequently linked to poor pre-school performance and parents must understand the importance of ensuring children understand their actions.

Please provide Pre-school with a copy of your child's birth certificate, and relevant medical forms and up to date contact numbers in case of an emergency.  Please ensure that you complete, sign and return all relevant paperwork to Pre-school as soon as possible.

Each term a Statement of Undertaking will need completing to enable us to access funding for your child.

The role of the children
Children will be consistently reminded of appropriate behaviour both in and around Pre-school. All children will be encouraged to respect and care for other people to ensure a more happy and positive environment for everyone. 

The Pre-school guide for good behaviour is as follows:
  • Follow instructions carefully
  • Listen carefully when people talk
  • Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
  • Raise hand instead of calling out
  • Share and help each other
  • Use kind words and hands.

Please be aware thta Little Battlers is not  a feeder Pre-school for Battling Brook Primary School.
