Pupil Premium Funding

Context:  Battling Brook is a large primary school with a higher than average proportion of pupils with SEN, many of whom have social and emotional needs.

The number of pupils registered for free school meals is lower than average however we suspect that more are eligible than this figure suggests and that there are many vulnerable families who do not qualify for free school meals.

Principles:

  • We will use the limited funding available carefully to target as many pupils as possible but it means that not all children in receipt of free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at any one time.
  • Importantly, it is noted that not all children that are eligible for Pupil Premium are socially disadvantaged or making less than ‘expected’ progress. It is also noted that, not all children who are eligible for Pupil Premium come up against barriers to learning. It is, however, understood that a need may arise at any point during a child’s education in primary school therefore groups and individuals are prioritised and interventions reviewed at regular intervals during the school year. It is our aim that every child that is eligible for Pupil Premium will have an intervention or work that has directly impacted on them during their time at primary school. The provision for this is continuous in areas such as: Pastoral Care and Support, Homework Club and other Teacher led groups designed to secure and extend learning and tailored resources.
  • The school closely monitors pupil progress and the impact of interventions. Much of the support or intervention in our provision cost more than any one child is entitled to at any one time. Therefore, the school uses other budgets to contribute to this provision as well. Pupil Premium children are prioritised when provision mapping. We have a range of groups that require intervention therefore the school also uses other school funds to add to this provision to enable other children to access these effective interventions too.

Approach:  The school has high expectations of all its pupils. Support is given to pupils, who need it most, and vulnerable pupils are identified through the school’s tracking system and their results are monitored to decide on the best actions to take place. Frequent tracking and thorough interrogation of the data ensures that English and Maths interventions are put into place quickly and these interventions are rigorously monitored. 

A top priority for the school is to raise aspirations of children through a carefully planned curriculum, teaching and support for vulnerable groups. Pupil Premium has been used to maintain high staffing levels and has funded training, for all staff but especially for teaching assistants, who lead most of the intervention programmes.

Intervention is closely tailored to meet the needs of the children and teaching assistants are trained to use specialist resources and strategies. This includes emotional and social support as well as academic intervention.

The school has a “low cost” policy for trips, activities and visits so that the children have experiences and topics to talk or write about in their learning.

Battling Brook understands how important it is to involve parents with the school and in their children’s learning. Within the whole school staff there is a successful pastoral team; these two members of staff have liaison with parents as part of their specific role in school in addition to a trained counsellor who provides deeper support over a longer period of time. One of the Pastoral Team has completed the ELSA (Emotional Literacy) and Thinkwise training as a result of the Pupil Premium. 

Support for pupils’ social and emotional needs is extremely important and there are a number of ways in which the school supports pupils. Before school nurture groups and lunchtime groups provide vital structure and support for children outside the classroom and within the often challenging times for children.

A high proportion of children in the nurture groups are eligible for Free School Meals or are looked after children. All borderline vulnerable pupils are considered for the groups.

Aims:

  • To accelerate progress in Reading, Writing and maths, to ‘diminish the difference’ so that the vulnerable group achieve in line with the National ‘Others’ group.
  • To ensure Teaching and Learning meets the needs of ALL pupils; to remove or reduce the barriers to learning, especially for children with Social and Emotional Needs.

Before School Nurture Group

Children who experience social and/or emotional difficulties are provided with a calm, secure environment to begin their school day. Those who display high levels of anxiety at leaving their parents/carers in the morning have the opportunity to prepare themselves in a small group atmosphere with staff who received training on the needs of children with anxiety/attachment issues. They are better prepared to enter their classroom ready to learn.

KS1 and KS2 lunchtime clubs

Children need to be provided with the opportunity to run off excess energy and switch off from the classroom environment, however, some children struggle with the freedom that the school playground can provide. Members of our support staff run clubs which enable children to relax and have fun in a safe environment. They do craft activities, play games, play the Ukulele, go outside and work in the garden to name but a few activities. The staff have also been trained in Lego Therapy and use the techniques involved in this throughout other sessions.

Management of SEND

A number of our pupils who receive Pupil Premium funding are also identified has having a Special Educational Need. To this end, the SENCo ensures that they remain up-to-date in terms of the National Agenda and changes, by attending both local and national training events. This ensures that school policies and practises are relevant and proven.

Support Staff

The school focuses on Quality First Teaching as the first layer in ensuring all children achieve and make progress. In order for this to happen the school invests a large proportion of the Pupil Premium funding in employing and training a highly skilled support staff who support the teacher at every level of teaching. The staff may work alongside the teacher in the classroom, ensuring that group sizes in relation to adult/pupil ratio are kept a good level enabling all children swift adult intervention if necessary. Despite that quality first layer of teaching, some children require further explanation or additional opportunities to practise or develop skills. It is at this point that the support staff can provide the additional and different intervention to enable pupils to grasp concepts and topics and make progress. Recently the school has developed sessions where the staff provide pre-teaching sessions for pupils which has proved invaluable in both raising attainment and the self-confidence of those children who attend.

Use of class teachers

 

In addition to the support staff interventions the school utilises the skills of experienced trained teachers to work with groups of children in order for them to ‘keep up’ or ‘catch up’ with their peers. This is a new initiative and we are confident that it will have a positive impact on standards of attainment and progress.

School Care Team

The roles of the school’s Pastoral team are instrumental in the achievement of our pupils, particularly those who receive additional funding. Our Behaviour Support member of staff is trained in a variety of social, emotional and mental health support programs, notably the ELSA course and the Educational Psychology ‘Thinkwise’ project. For some of our children they need to be supported in understanding and managing their emotions before any type of learning can take place and this help and guidance is ably provided by the Care Team.

In addition to support given to the pupils, our Care Advisor is vital in providing assistance to parents and carers of our pupils. The work of the team is vital to ensure that class teachers concentrate on the teaching and learning aspects of education and are supported in the wider aspects of nurturing the pupils by an experienced and skilled team; in providing this type of support our pupils are more capable of working and learning in the classroom.

As a direct result if the impact of our Care Team and their ability to provide timely, swift intervention at all levels, the number of behaviour incidents has reduced significantly. This also impacts on lesson time and learning as class teachers are able to focus on the learning rather than any behaviour issues.

Despite the successes and intervention of our care Team, some children require additional specialist support. For some of these children their levels of anxiety are such that they work our councillor whose remit is wide and covers many aspects of the social, emotional and mental health support. For many of these children these sessions have reduced levels of anxiety in both the child and their parents.

Trips/uniform allowance

A key part of our curriculum is the engagement in each topic. We believe that children need to be involved and genuinely interested in their learning in order to develop and make progress. One of the ways we do this is to carefully choose trips and/or visitors which would enhance learning. It is important that all children can partake in these enrichment opportunities so this aspect of the funding is key.

By providing financial support towards the cost of uniform we ensure that all children feel part of the school community and experience the sense of belonging to the school as a whole.

Lunchtime Homework Club

For some of our children who access Pupil Premium Funding the pressure of completing homework can add to the stresses of daily school life. This club supports the school policy for homework whilst also providing adult support to encourage and assist if a child needs it.

As part of our mission to ensure Quality First Teaching for all pupils, the school has heavily invested in the phonics programme RML. In order to maximise the benefits of this programme we release senior staff in order to monitor the delivery and progress of the sessions. In addition the school pays for a Specialist Leader from the company to visit the school termly to support the reading leader and provide additional training for all staff. We believe it is vital that phonics knowledge is embedded early in a child’s school career to provide the best foundation for English in the future and so invest heavily in this aspect of the curriculum.   

The results of this can be seen in our successful Phonics data over time.

 Progress in Reading and Writing for children receiving Pupil Premium funding was in the ‘Average’ band and this was in line with our ‘Other’ pupils. Maths progress for this group was below ‘Average’ compared to the National ‘Other’ group.

Next Steps:  It is intended that the Premium continue to fund specific staff roles in order to continue to provide academic and social and emotional support for our children. In addition the subsidiaries towards trips and events will continue to provide all pupils a wide and enriched learning environment and opportunities.

·        Much of the Pupil premium focus has been Reading and writing. We need to continue to develop our Maths intervention. In liaison with the Maths Subject leaders, Pupil Premium lead and SENCo  will investigate any additional maths interventions.

·        We will continue with our range of provision and children that are in receipt of Pupil Premium will be prioritised when provision mapping.

·        Continue to complete a full analysis if assessment information in terms of the needs of children that are in receipt of Pupil premium AND have Special Educational Needs AND are considered vulnerable to ensure that provision is closely matched to need and to see if there are further areas of provision to develop.

·        Continue to monitor individual Pupil Progress throughout the year and ensure at Pupil Progress Meetings, pupils who receive Pupil Premium are highlighted and discussed, to ensure at least expected progress is made.  

Free School Meals

Since September 2012, new Government funding has become available.  All pupils eligible for Free School Meals are entitled to additional funding to further support their education and raise their attainment.  If your child is, or ever has been, eligible to Free School Meals, or if you are unsure, please contact the school office.

 

Are you entitled to Free School Meals?

There are funding opportunities available to parents of children who are entitled to Free School Meals.

To receive Free School Meals you only need to have any one of the following:-

  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (IBJSA)
  • An income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income which from 6th April 2010 does not exceed £16,190 as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs
  • Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Children who receive Income Support (IS) or Income Based Jobseekers Allowance in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals.

If you claim for a Free School Meal then your child will be entitled to the following:-

  1. £100 funding towards trips and music lessons or school uniform
  2. A free school meal that you may choose to receive.

Also, the school will benefit by receiving extra funding for all children in school. 

This year we are promoting school uniform.  By registering for a F.S.M. your child has the option to have a school meal at lunchtime or, alternatively, you can still provide a packed lunch if they prefer not to have a hot dinner.  Either way you will become eligible for £100 funding as detailed above.

Looked After Children/Adopted Children (including S.G.O. or R.O.)

From April 2014, pupils enrolled at the school who are looked after or adopted, will be eligible to receive additional funding through a new government initiative.  If you believe that your child should be entitled to funding under this criteria, please contact the school office for further information.

Individual Yearly Allocation

Financial Year 2013/2014: The school received £103,807 during this financial year to further support pupils. 

Financial Year 2014/2015: The school received £137,800 during this financial year to further support pupils. 

Financial Year 2015/2016: The school received £149,160 during this financial year to further support pupils.
