Return to School Autumn 2020

We hope that you and your child enjoyed the messages from their teachers yesterday. Today we write to inform you of our plans for the start of the next academic year as the Government expectation is for all children to return to full time education.

Having read the Government guidance carefully and consulted with local schools and senior leaders, we have decided upon how we will reintroduce all of our children back to school.

In order to facilitate this increase in pupil numbers, whilst also keeping safety measures in place, it is necessary to stagger the school day in terms of start and end times to minimize congestion; break and lunchtimes will also be staggered.

Start time

Lunch time

Finish time

Years 1 and 2

Years 3 and 4

Year 5 and 6

Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes before the start and finish times and leave the premises promptly. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

It is important that these times are adhered to in order to carefully manage the number of people on site at any time.

We are mindful that most of our children have not been in school since March, and as such, may feel apprehensive about returning to school. With this in mind, we have planned quite a different start to the new school year.

We have decided that only half the year groups will return on Wednesday 26th August and then the other half on Thursday 27th August, with the full school (Years 1-6) in school on Friday 28th August. In addition, each class will spend their first morning with their teacher from this current academic year (in their new classroom), and then the afternoon with their new teacher. We hope that returning to familiar face after such a long time, will help ease the transition back to school.

Wednesday 26th August

Only Years 2, 4 and 6 will be in school at their new times.

Year 2 8:30 - 3:00

Year 4 8:45 - 3:15

Year 6 9:00 – 3:30

Children will need to go to their new classrooms, as detailed in the previous letter about new classes (attached again for your reference).

Thursday 27th August

Only Years 1, 3 and 5 will be in school at their new times.

Year 1 8:30 - 3:00

Year 3 8:45 - 3:15

Year 5 9:00 – 3:30

Children will need to go to their new classrooms, as detailed in the previous letter about new classes (attached again for your reference).

Friday 28th August

Years 1 – 6 will all be in school at the times stated above.

Throughout the COVID 19 pandemic we have maintained and revised a full risk assessment relating to all aspects of health and safety on a weekly basis. A summary of relevant aspects is provided below.

Before coming to school

Please bring only the minimum equipment ie small bag

Clean uniform

Hands washed

Water bottle (sufficient for the day)

Lunchbox (if required) Midmorning fruit (if required)

Sunhat (if required) Apply suncream (if required) Coat (if required)

Entering School

Please check your time for drop off and pick up

Bring your child straight to the designated classroom

Maintain social distancing while waiting

Children will be asked to use hand sanitiser or wash their hands on entering school. Please let us know if your child has any allergies to such hygiene products.

In the classroom

Children will be taught in “bubbles”

Pupil movement around the school will be minimal ie within their own year group or phase.

Same equipment (provided by school)

Same toilets

Social distancing, where possible

Play and lunchtimes

Staggered break and lunch times

Same equipment (provided by school)

Hands washed more frequently

Leaving School

Parent collects at designated time (social distancing)

Staff member will send the child to their parent (Y1- Yr3)

Child to use hand sanitiser/wash hands before leaving

Children to wash hands and change when they get home.

Please let us know if someone different is collecting your child.

When your child comes to school:

Your child will need to wear full uniform every day.

You may also want to send them with a named sunhat when the weather is warmer.  For very hot days, please ensure your child has suncream which should be applied before school (once a day products are recommended).

Please make sure your child washes their hands before coming to school and when they get home.

Your child may bring their own specific school equipment but we request that all non-essential items are left at home.

Mobile phones are not permitted to be in school. If you are a parent of a Year 6 child who feels it is essential for their child to bring their phone in to school, please contact the office and request a Mobile Phone Permissions Form.

Ideally only one family member to drop off and/or pick up each day.

Curriculum: We are, of course, very mindful that the children have been away from school for a significant period of time. Therefore, in addition to working on key skills and concepts, we will focus on activities linked to reflective thinking and well-being.

Dinners: In order to manage this transition to whole school reopening the only option for a paid meal (which will be reviewed at the end of September) will be a cold option ‘deli’ grab bag.  For Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 this remains a free option as part of the Universal Free School Meal Offer; for Years 3 – 6 the grab bag will be the paid option. These will need to be ordered during registration with the class teacher in the morning. If you do wish to purchase a meal, please ensure that there are sufficient funds on your account.

When your child gets home from school:

We would recommend that your child changes into fresh clothes.

  • If you, your child or a member of your household displays Covid 19 symptoms, please isolate with your household immediately and inform the school via email or telephone.
  • If your child displays Covid 19 symptoms whilst at school, your child will be isolated from others, so please collect your child from school immediately (it is essential your contact details are up-to-date on SIMS Parent App. and Parent Pay).
  • We expect you to follow the social distancing guidelines outside of school for the protection of all our children and staff.
  • Please do not congregate outside of the classrooms/playground/school when dropping off or picking up your child.

It is important that parents and families understand and are prepared for the fact that there will be disruption from time-to-time as we open for more pupils.  The new NHS test and trace system has now started and it is possible that individuals or groups may be asked to isolate.  This means there may be times when some pupils will be asked to stay at home.  This will be necessary to help keep the virus under control and allow us to begin to do some of the things we perhaps have taken for granted in the past.

In the event of any further closure (whether whole school, individual year group or phase), home learning will recommence. Further details will follow when necessary.

Early Birds

It is our intention that Early Birds recommence at the usual time in the Lodge. As ever, please adhere to social distancing on arrival.

Please continue to check your emails throughout the summer in case further guidance causes us to alter our plans.

Your patience and understanding is really appreciated as we all work together during the next phase of ‘returning to normal’, and we look forward to seeing you all very soon.

In the meantime, we would like to thank you for your outstanding support, and wish you all pleasant summer.

Kind regards and best wishes,

Mr Marsden and Mrs Mathie
